Eco-Friendly Painting: Low-VOC and Zero-VOC Paints
With the passage of time, we are becoming increasingly aware of the dangers and damage that we inflict on the environment when we are careless. Apart from the alarming changes that this causes to the planet, we can also see the ways we have caused health problems and other serious issues for ourselves. For that reason, more and more residents of New Jersey are interested in eco-friendly painting. Many of our clients now request that we complete our interior and exterior painting using low-VOC or zero-VOC paints.
What Are Low-VOC or Zero-VOC Paints?
VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds. These materials form in a thousand different ways, and are present in everything from human breath to photocopiers. For many years, commercial paints were produced with these VOC's in the solvents. The solvents are the part of paint that help it to flow and stick properly when wet. These chemicals then evaporate from the paint, leaving a dry, smooth film. Unfortunately, these chemicals remain in the air for a time, creating that "new paint" smell. Eventually, they disperse into the environment.
Low-VOC paints have a reduced amount of volatile compounds, making them less smelly and more friendly to the environment. Zero-VOC paints do not have any volatile compounds in the solvents. For a truly eco-friendly paint, however, you need to make sure that your brand of paint does not include any VOC's in the color pigments, which are added later.
Are Low or Zero-VOC Paints as Good as Regular Paints?
All major paint manufacturers now produce high-quality eco-friendly paints. Each brand has several excellent eco-friendly paint products which perform extremely well compared to other lines of paint. As long as you buy an upper-end paint from a good manufacturer like Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore, you can be assured you have good paint on your home.
