How to Prepare Walls for Interior Painting
At Spectrum Painting, we know that an excellent painting job begins with excellent surface preparation. If you are looking to paint an interior wall, here are some tips from aprofessional painting company on how to make preparations that will ensure the best results:
The first stage in interior painting is to clear the painting area. Begin by removing all furniture from the work area. Larger items of furniture may be moved to the center of the room and covered. Next, remove any pictures, mirrors, or art from the walls, along with all nails or picture hanging hardware. To guard against potential spills or drips during the painting process, cover the entire floor with a tarp or drop cloth. Also, be sure to remove all hardware (door handles etc.) as well as outlet covers and wall plates around light switches. If wall-mounted light fixtures can be taken down easily, they should be removed; otherwise cover them with painter's tape.
Once all non-painted surfaces have been removed or covered, you are ready to begin stage two: prepare the surfaces to be painted. This step is often overlooked in many interior painting jobs, but is crucial for a clean, professional look. First, for maximum paint adhesion, wash the walls with a mild mixture of TSP and water. Next, make sure the surface is completely smooth. If there are any bumps (such as old tape, dried paint drips, etc.), level them out with a putty knife or sandpaper. Any dents or holes should be repaired with spackle.
You are now ready for stage three: apply primer to necessary surfaces. Because spackle is highly porous, it often soaks in paint, leaving a patchy area on newly painted walls. This uneven look can be avoided by the application of a primer on all areas where spackle was used. If an entire wall is stained or covered with a dark colored paint, most painting contractors recommend that a coat of primer be applied to the wall to ensure that stains and old colors do not show through.
Congratulations! With surfaces clean and smooth, it's time to splash some color on your wall!
