Six Signs it's Time to Paint Your Exterior

Six Signs it's Time to Paint Your Exterior

Taking care of your home, including maintaining the painted surface inside and outside your home, is one of the most important things you can do to keep its value up. Along with keeping your kitchen and bathrooms updated, a clean, maintained home looks inviting and can actually help raise the market value. Quality paint also protects your home's exterior against the elements. Repainting your exterior or interior is a great way to make a big impact in updating your home, but it's also a smart investment.

So how do you know when it's time to paint your house? Watch for these 6 signs.

1. The Paint Shows Signs of Wear

Peeling, bubbling, and cracking paint are signs that the paint wasn't applied correctly in the first place or that the paint has succumbed to the elements. These signs may also mean you're dealing with dry rot or mold. They shouldn't be ignored, as they can lead to bigger problems down the road.

2. The Paint Is Fading

Fading paint makes a house look worn and tired. It's time to repaint when the paint doesn't have that same vibrant color it had when it was originally painted. Dark paints will fade quicker than lighter paints, so keep an eye out.

3. You're Putting the House on the Market

First impressions only happen once. That's why curb appeal is so important when you want to sell your house. Potential buyers will make split-second opinions about your house the moment they drive into your driveway. If the paint job is old, or was poorly done, they'll notice -- and that may affect their decision to place an offer or not. Likewise, the interior of your home needs to look fresh and taken care of. New paint can make your home look modern, clean, and inviting.

4. You're Seeing Gaps or Shrinking

Do the boards on your home's exterior look as if they're shrinking? Do you see gaps between the boards? This is a sign of potential dry rot, meaning moisture could be getting into the wood. You'll want a professional to assess the damage.

5. The Caulk Is Cracking

If the caulking on the exterior of your house is cracking or showing signs of being brittle, it has lost its elasticity and it's time for an updated paint job.

6. The Right Amount of Time Has Passed

You don't have to wait to see signs of paint failure before you paint. In fact, it's better if you don't. Just like you want to replace your roof before it's caving in, repainting before you have huge issues will save you a headache or 12 -- and it will keep your house in tip-top shape.

Have used Spectrum Painting for interior painting of our kitchen/nook, dining and living rooms as well as power washing of our deck. Spectrum is a very professional, efficient and thorough contractor and the results are excellent. From initial booking through site survey, cost estimate, contracting, scheduling, on time arrival, schedule adherence, friendliness of crew, clean up and follow up, they excel. Will not hesitate to use Spectrum again soon.

We recently had the exterior of our house soft washed and painted. I cannot say enough about Rich with my initial questions with the estimate to then project follow-up after completion. Spectrum was not the least expensive estimate I had but I was impressed right away with Rich circling back to me to see if I had any questions after he did the estimate. Right away I had a feeling that this company believed in customer service and customer satisfaction. So I went with my gut and I couldn’t be happier! Brian was fabulous with all the power washing and then Hector and his crew were top-notch. They were on time, friendly and helpful with questions and concerns I had and the job site was kept meticulously clean for the whole week. The sense of pride in the job was evident from each of the painters in my crew. I will never use another painting company again for my indoor or outdoor needs. Simply the best!

I have used Spectrum Painting time and time again over the years. They were fantastic in 2013 in a very tight time window, painting the entire interior of our home before we moved in right near the holidays. Each of the painters were expert, efficient and hardworking and perhaps most importantly trustworthy. I have always felt safe with Spectrum's staff. Then we used Rich and his company in 2015 for our exterior and deck. For that job it was Jose and his crew that did a phenomenal job preparing the siding and trim and then painting thoroughly. Many know that it's the preparation for paint that creates a lasting quality finish. Additionally, as others have mentioned, the painters are very capable but importantly always clean up after their day. Sometimes the floor is cleaner than when they started! Lastly I just called for a few touch ups and Oldemar, who's painted here on many occasions, was dispatched. He completed a tremendous amount in his two days here...working diligently to get my long list completed in a timely manner. Again he is an exemplary example of Rich's best...he managed some light carpentry and prepared each surface will great skill. And now my walls, trim and doors look like brand new again! For the best result you need to go with a tried and true check out Spectrum Painting.
